Education Queensland provides music education as part of the Queensland Arts curriculum. Many studies have shown strong links between music education leading to an overall improvement of students’ literacy and numeracy skills. It has also been proven that regular music education increases children’s emotional, social, intellectual skills and independence.
Hatton Vale State School values the benefits that music education brings to students development particularly in the areas of literacy and numeracy. As a result students in:
Preparatory (prep) receive 1 hour of music education a week.
Years 1 -3 receive a minimum 30 minutes per week with the option to join the school’s choir as an extra-curricular activity.
Year 4-6 receive 30 minutes per week with the option to join extra-curricular activities of choir, instrumental tuition and instrumental band.
During the year Hatton Vale State School Choirs have several opportunities to perform. Performances such as ANZAC Ceremony, Music Count Us In, Education Week, Hatton Vale State School Community Christmas Concert, as well as many other events are a regular occurrence and enjoyed by all.
Through out the school year students have several opportunities to achieve music awards in recognition of excellence, diligence and application. The awards currently given to school students are:
Awarded to the class who has displayed outstanding learning, behaviour and effort during the week.
- School Expectations Music Student of the Week Award
- Choir Attendance Award (Awarded to students who maintain 100% attendance to choir rehearsals - excluding absence from school).
- Music Academic Award
- Instrumental Music Award (Awarded to one year seven student who has achieved very high levels across all aspects of instrumental music during their graduating year).
End of year break up party - An invitation to the end of year break up party is given to members of the choirs and band that have consistently attended rehearsals, performances and maintained school expectations throughout the year. A small donation may be required to support the costs of catering for this event. Any remaining donations go towards further development of Music Education within the school.
